EPEC- Pediatrics is a curriculum for training health professionals in Paediatric Palliative Care. The curriculum was developed in the United States of America by a group of interdisciplinary Paediatric Palliative Care specialists. The programme has now been delivered in over 122 countries and is growing across the Asia Pacific region.

The programme has three levels, with end user training, train the trainer programme and professional development workshop (training trainers to deliver the Level 2 training). In the last month, there have been three programmes held in the Asia Pacific region – with an end user programme in China, and train the trainer in South Korea, and both end user and train the trainer in Australia.

Kia Mau te Ora member, Dr Gemma Aburn, is part of the Asia Pacific leadership team for EPEC-Pediatrics and a Master Facilitator for the programme.

The programme in Brisbane, was the first time EPEC-Pediatrics train the trainer programme was held in Australia/New Zealand since 2016. 21 Clinicians attended a Train the Trainer programme and a further 35 clinicians received end user training to support delivery of palliative care for children and families.

The recent programme in Seoul (27-29 September), led by Dr Gemma Aburn and Dr Justin Baker (Chief of Quality of Life for all (QuOLA) at Stanford Children’s Health (San Francisco), along with Korean colleagues, Dr Min Sun Kim (Seoul National University Hospital) and Dr Seoung Yeon Kwon (Severence Hospital, Seoul) builds on an end user programme held in Incheon, South Korea last year. We have this week trained 31 trainers to deliver teaching on Paediatric Palliative Care across South Korea. There is an incredible enthusiasm and desire to bring about change to ensure children and families receive quality palliative care across South Korea. This was evident in the over 200 clinicians that attended an evening seminar on Paediatric Palliative Care at Seoul National University Hospital the night before starting EPEC. Justin and I, both delivered a lecture about communication in Paediatric Palliative Care, followed by rich discussion with participants from across the country, and a variety of professions/disciplines.

Alongside global projects, Gemma continues to lead the development of regional Paediatric Palliative Care education programmes across Aotearoa, which are also informed by EPEC-Pediatrics, but integrate the cultural context of Aotearoa – with tikanga Māori being woven through both programme delivery and content.
